The Fig Tree X Rana Zaher

For its first in-house collaboration, The Fig Tree presents a series of copper trays imagined by founder Rana Balsan and illustrated by Lebanese designer and archaeologist Rana Zaher. Handcrafted by coppersmiths in Northern Lebanon, these trays reimagine a traditional Levantine object through a contemporary lens.

Rana Balsan’s vision was to revive the heritage of copperwork while infusing it with new narratives. Zaher’s illustrations bring this vision to life, weaving stories through symbolic fruits and vegetables deeply rooted in Levantine culture. Olive branches spill from intricately drawn baskets; pomegranates echo the phases of the moon — subtle nods to mythology, memory, and the rhythms of the region.

Based between Berlin and Beirut, Zaher draws inspiration from the visual languages of ancient and medieval Southwestern Asia. Her fantastical style blends archaeology with imagination, giving these trays a voice that is both timeless and newly born.

In Lebanon, coppersmithing is a sacred craft — a living legacy of fire, hands, and tradition, passed down through generations as a symbol of artisanal mastery and cultural identity
